St German's News - 31 May 2020 Pentecost

Preaching - Many thanks to Fr Rhys for preaching for us on Pentecost Sunday.  It is good to hear another voice reflect on how we can live as Christians in lockdown and to hear something of his experience as a busy GP in West Cardiff. Diolch. Next Week Geraint will preach for us on Trinity Sunday.
Corpus Christi
- We will celebrate the feast of the body and blood of Jesus Christ on Sunday 14 June.
Lockdown Transition
- Unfortunately, there is still no sign of our churches opening for public worship or even private prayer.  Whilst the online worship and meetings on zoom are not for everyone at this stage it is really all we can offer.  We continue to pray for our leaders and those on the frontline of seeking an end to the pandemic.  May they always be guided by compassion for those who are in greatest need and suffer the most and may make good and wise decisions on behalf of our common good.

St German’s Zoom Coffee - Next meets this coming Tuesday 2 June at 10:30am.   If you’d like to participate please let Fr Phelim know.  It is very easy to join: all you need is a computer or phone with camera and the link we send by email explains the next steps.   If you need help on the day and time please call Fr Phelim on the landline.
Memorial Garden - now open each day (according to latest restrictions from Welsh Gov = 2 households max can meet there). If you’d like to do a bit of gardening please let Fr Phelim know when and what time so that we can keep it safe.
Lift Up Your Hearts -  Spiritual Support
during the pandemic. This week’s reflections are from the artist and poet, Roger Wagner. Copies available online.
Easter Course - Concludes this coming Wednesday when we ask ‘why on earth would we bother with Jesus’.  We will host a zoom meeting on this issue on Wednesday at 7pm.  Ask Fr Phelim for details and an invitation.  The course has been a great success and we hope to use this format of zoom meeting for our other nurturing courses, Faith QI and the Book Groups.
Foodbank - Please continue to donate food locally.  Please see Cardiff Foodbank website for details of open collection sites and how and when to drop off food for those in need.

Thy Kingdom Come - Join our Prayer Novena from Ascension to Pentecost (see website). There is a document with daily prayer intentions as well as a more detailed novena booklet that can be downloaded or used to help us pray online.  We join with Christians throughout the world during these days of prayer leading up to Pentecost.

Walsingham National Pilgrimage at Home - the Anglican Shrine is hosting an afternoon of prayer tomorrow (25 May) which can be followed online www.walsinghamanglican.org.uk

Lockdown Transition - Currently our government in Wales and Westminster are looking at ways to help society transition out of this time of lockdown, in as safe a way as possible.  Churches too are beginning to look at how we might begin to open our buildings and resume some services in a socially distant and careful way.  If you’d like this to happen ‘safely’ sooner rather than later we’d appreciate your views and suggestions as to how we might do this. Please Email or call Fr Phelim.                                  Zoom Coffee - Next meets on Wednesday 3 June at 10:30am.   If you’d like to participate please let Fr Phelim know.  It is very easy to join: all you need is a computer or phone with camera and the link we send by email explains the next steps.   If you need help on the day and time please call Fr Phelim on the landline.  Once members are able to connect we will publish dates of other meetings.                                   Lift Up Your Hearts -  Spiritual Support during the pandemic. This week’s reflections are from the Margaret Sentamu. Copies available online.

Easter Course - Continues this coming Wednesday when we ask ‘why on earth would I believe in the Christian message’.  We will host a zoom meeting on this issue on Wednesday at 7pm.  Ask Fr Phelim for details and an invitation.                          Tackling Loneliness - YourNeighbour.org  is running a national helping for people who need help during the lockdown.  Our parishes have joined this national network which seeks to support all who are struggling locally.  Telephone: 0300 323 9952.                   Foodbank - Please continue to donate food locally.  Please see Cardiff Foodbank website for details of open collection sites and how and when to drop off food for those in need.          Recently Departed - Elizabeth Mary Morris, Iris Murphy, Joan King, David Cornock (RIP)

Easter Course - This year we will follow the ‘Why on earth’ course created by the Church Army.  It builds on last year’s Faith Pictures course and runs over 6 weeks. The topics for each week begin with the question ‘why on earth’ and then: faith v science; bother with the church; are Christians so judgemental; do bad things happen to good people; would I believe the Christian message; bother with Jesus. Each session has a video to watch and guided questions for our discussion. We will host a zoom meeting on these questions each Wednesday at 7pm.  Ask Fr Phelim for details and an invitation.  Session 2: why on earth do we bother with the Church is this coming Wednesday 6 May at 7pm.

Coronavirus Support - If you know of anyone who is need or can’t access food shopping or collecting medicines please let at least some of us know as we may be able to help.

Thank You for the Music - Many thanks to Brian Williams who both read for our online mass this week as well as providing some organ music to add more colour and variety to the service. If anyone else would like to add a reflection etc to future services just let Fr Phelim know.

Lift Up Your Hearts -  Spiritual Support during the pandemic. We will make available for download also a weekly page prepared by the Church Times.  If you can’t access the internet please let us know and we will print out some copies that can be delivered posted to you.

Online Services  - The liturgical life of our community continues with online services. The format of these are youtube videos taken in either our churches or in the vicarage.  Church based videos are allowed involving the priest/minister and one other person to film or say the responses. We also have scope for other use of video in our exploration of digital ministry in this time of social isolation.                                 Foodbank - Please continue to donate food locally.  For dropping off donated food Cardiff Foodbank Hub remains open in Splott  on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:30-13:30 plus many supermarkets.  Again see website for details.
